Pimp C Died From That Lean

5 02 2008

Everyone called this shit already but the LA County Coroner’s Office has made it official: Pimp C died from drinking sizzurp, in combination with a condition known as sleep apnea.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Influential Southern rapper Pimp C died of an accidental overdose of a combination of drugs he had named in his lyrics — codeine and promethazine, the county coroner’s office ruled Monday.

The drugs are key ingredients in “syrup,” a narcotic of choice in Southern rap circles that was most famously celebrated by Three 6 Mafia and Pimp C’s group Underground Kingz in the 2000 single “Sippin’ on some Syrup.”

The coroner’s office said Pimp C had sleep apnea, which causes people to stop breathing for up to 30 seconds at a time while sleeping. That illness combined with large amounts of prescription-strength cough syrup is what killed the rapper, coroner’s Capt. Ed Winter said. (Source)

A damn shame.

Heath Ledger Found Dead

22 01 2008

The actor Heath Ledger was found dead this afternoon in an apartment building at 421 Broome Street in SoHo, according to the New York City police. Mr. Ledger was 28.

At 3:31 p.m., a masseuse arrived at Apartment 5A in the building for an appointment with Mr. Ledger, the police said. The masseuse was let in to the home by a housekeeper, who then knocked on the door of Mr. Ledger’s bedroom. When no one answered, the housekeeper and the masseuse opened the bedroom and found Mr. Ledger unconscious. They shook him, but he did not respond. They immediately called the authorities.

The police said they did not suspect foul play. Officials said pills were found near the body. (Source)

This is crazy! Anyone following the news knows Brad Renfro died last week at 25. They say famous deaths come in threes so let’s hope that’s not true.

Assorted Updates from TMZ:

* The pills found were over-the-counter and may have been sleep-aid Ambien

* Heath had substance abuse problems in the past but a friend says he’d been clean for a year.

* He was NOT in Mary-Kate Olsen’s apartment

* Too early to determine if death was accidental or suicide

Cocaine Is A Helluva Drug!

16 01 2008

Rock n’ roll pioneer Ike Turner’s death last month at age 76 was caused by a cocaine overdose, the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s office said Wednesday.

“We are listing that he abused cocaine, and that’s what resulted in the cocaine toxicity,” said Paul Parker, chief investigator at the medical examiner’s office.

The medical examiner’s office also listed hypertensive cardiovascular disease and pulmonary emphysema as “significant and contributing factors” to Turner’s death, Parker said.

A telephone call from The Associated Press seeking comment from the attorney of Turner’s daughter, Mia Turner, was not immediately returned.

Turner, whose musical accomplishments were overshadowed by his image as the man who brutally abused former wife Tina Turner, died Dec. 12 after years of drug abuse. He was jailed in 1989 and served 17 months.

Well, color me shocked with a Crayola Washable.

Lil’ Mama’s Mother Has Died

18 12 2007

Our condolences go out to Lil’ Mama, as word is spreading around the Net that her mother has passed from some form of cancer.

It’s sad to hear whenever someone’s mother has been ill. Perhaps that is why she hadn’t gotten a release date for her album yet — she was dealing with family drama.

Our prayers go out to her & her family.

Ike Turner dies at 76

12 12 2007

It has been confirmed that Ike Turner, who is more famously known as beating his ex-wife Tina Turner ( “Eat the cake!”) has passed away in San Diego, California.

SAN DIEGO - Ike Turner, whose role as one of rock’s critical architects was overshadowed by his ogrelike image as the man who brutally abused former wife and icon Tina Turner, died Wednesday at his home in suburban San Diego. He was 76.

He did pass away this morning” at his home in San Marcos, in northern San Diego County, said Scott M. Hanover of Thrill Entertainment Group, which managed Turner’s musical career.

There was no immediate word on the cause of death, which was first reported by celebrity Web site TMZ.com.

Turner managed to rehabilitate his image somewhat in his later years, touring around the globe with his band the Kings of Rhythm and drawing critical acclaim for his work. He won a Grammy in 2007 in the traditional blues album category for “Risin’ With the Blues.”

But his image is forever identified as the drug-addicted, wife-abusing husband of Tina Turner. He was hauntingly portrayed by Laurence Fishburne in the movie “What’s Love Got To Do With It,” based on Tina Turner’s autobiography.

This is wild! I wasn’t even expecting this one! You know death’scome in three’s, so who is next? Our prayers go out to his family. I’m interested in what Tina is going to say in her statement.

TMZ Reporting Pimp C Found Dead!

4 12 2007

OMG….

Pimp C, real name Chad Butler — and one half of the rap duo UGK, was found dead in a hotel room this morning. He was 33.

L.A. County Fire responded to a 911 call at the Mondrian Hotel, located on trendy Sunset Strip in Hollywood. They arrived to his sixth floor hotel room to find him dead in bed.

UGK is best known for appearing on the Jay-Z track “Big Pimpin’” in 2000, and more recently with Outkast on the song “International Player’s Anthem (I Choose You).” Pimp C had just performed with fellow rapper Too Short at the “House of Blues” in L.A. on Saturday night. (source)

WOW. Random…RIP Pimp C. I hope it wasn’t drugs or foul play.

We’ll try and update you when we hear more…

Club Promoter Says Fabolous Was Present Night of Friend’s Murder

27 11 2007

A promoter for the club Duvet says Fabolous was present at the NYC hot spot the night his longtime friend Shamel McKinney was murdered in a melee.

As SOHH previously reported, Fab (born John Jackson) claims to have been no where around when his longtime friend, 25-year-old Shamel McKinney, was stabbed to death, early Friday morning (November 23). The rapper’s attorney claimed he hadn’t even gone to the club, Duvet, that night. But club promoter, Andre Faria, says that this is a lie.

“Fabolous was there,” Faria told New York’s Daily News. “He came in with about a dozen people between midnight and 12:30 a.m.,” Faria’s company, Party Time NYC, provides promotions for the club. “He brought the guy who was murdered with him, as part of his crew.

The promoter said Fabolous left about 2 a.m. Friday, before the stabbing, saying he had a family obligation.

The rapper was reportedly giving security a hard time because they were frisking everyone, including the women in his camp. Security wasn’t going to allow the group in because they weren’t “dressed to impress, like the place wants,” Faria said. They were wearing baggy jeans and sneakers.

Faria said that sometime after Fab exited, two women from his entourage got into a fight. Witnesses told Faria that McKinney was stabbed while trying to break up that fight. (Source)

Judging by this picture, I’m not surprised they were hassled for dressing like slobs.

And if this is true, this “stop snitching” thing has gone too far. That’s like one of your best friends! I don’t care if you don’t like the police, you should do everything possible to try and find the people who murked your friend.

Condolences to Kanye West, RIP Donda West

11 11 2007

This is sad…very sad. Our prayers and condolences go to Kanye and his family. I had heard it was from complications during a surgery. I wonder what she died from, or what kind of surgery she was having!? I hadn’t even heard she was sick. I smell a malpractice lawsuit…

Donda West, mother of Kanye West and former chairwoman of Chicago State University’s English department, has died, a spokesman for the rapper said.

Donda West died Saturday night in Los Angeles, said the spokesman, who asked for anonymity because not all family members had been notified.

“The family respectfully asks for privacy during this time of grief,” the spokesman said.

A cause of death has not been released. (source)

AHM! is very sorry for Kanye’s loss. Losing a parent is never an easy thing, and I am sure it’s even harder when you are a public figure.

Amy Winehouse sort of performed last night at MTV Europe Awards in Munich while on all kinds of drugs and alcohol. This is a wreck! Her people couldn’t stop this? Say she was exhausted? That someone died? I fell out at how her back-up singer tried to do damage control but it didn’t work. Amy took home the Artists’ Choice Award and was booed while accepting it.

Tiny miscarried T.I.’s baby.

22 03 2007

Bossip is reporting that sources in Atlanta are saying that Tiny miscarried her and T.I.’s child. This is sad and just the other day I was reading about their break-up. We will keep you updated on this later.

edit:

“T.I.’s long time girlfriend and Baby’s mother, as well as former Xscape member — Tameka “Tiny” Cottle has allegedly miscarried their soon to be expecting bundle of joy. While the details are sketchy at the moment, what I can tell you is that she was roughly five months pregnant, and is currently recovering at an Atlanta hospital. Out of respect for the Hip-Hop couple I will not post which hospital Tiny is recovering at. Just know that she is enduring a lot right now and her privacy, here at SOHH.com, will be respected.
Our hearts here at Sohh.com go out to Tiny, TI and their families.”

Anna Nicole Smith Died.

8 02 2007

(CNN) — Reality TV star and former model Anna Nicole Smith was pronounced dead Thursday after being taken to a Florida hospital, a law enforcement source told CNN.

Smith, 39, collapsed at a south Florida hotel, according to news reports.

“I can confirm that she is deceased. It’s as shocking to me as to you guys,” Smith’s attorney, Ronald Rale, told Reuters. “I don’t know anything further. [Her lawyer and husband] Howard [K. Stern], obviously, is speechless and grieving.”

TMZ.com had reported that Smith collapsed at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida, and was rushed to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood just after 2 p.m. ET.

According to reports, Smith was found unresponsive in her hotel room.

Smith was involved in a paternity suit regarding the parentage of her daughter, Danielynn, as well as other disputes, including some regarding a house she stayed at in the Bahamas around the time she gave birth.

Earlier this week, Smith was included in a class-action lawsuit against a company, TrimSpa, for which she had worked as a spokesperson. TrimSpa makes a product it claims leads to substantial weight loss. The lawsuit alleges the marketing of the product, TrimSpa X32, was false or misleading.

Smith’s son, Daniel Wayne Smith, died at age 20 just days after the birth of Smith’s daughter. Pathologist Cyril Wecht said a lethal dose of methadone and antidepressants caused cardiac dysrhythmia, leading to his death.

R.I.P. James Brown

25 12 2006

James Brown, the dynamic, pompadoured “Godfather of Soul,” whose rasping vocals and revolutionary rhythms made him a founder of rap, funk and disco as well, died early Monday, his agent said. He was 73.

Brown was hospitalized with pneumonia at Emory Crawford Long Hospital on Sunday and died around 1:45 a.m. Monday, said his agent, Frank Copsidas of Intrigue Music. Longtime friend Charles Bobbit was by his side, he said.

Copsidas said Brown’s family was being notified of his death and that the cause was still uncertain. “We really don’t know at this point what he died of,” he said.

Along with Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan and a handful of others, Brown was one of the major musical influences of the past 50 years. At least one generation idolized him, and sometimes openly copied him. His rapid-footed dancing inspired Mick Jagger and Michael Jackson among others. Songs such as David Bowie’s “Fame,” Prince’s “Kiss,” George Clinton’s “Atomic Dog” and Sly and the Family Stone’s “Sing a Simple Song” were clearly based on Brown’s rhythms and vocal style.

If Brown’s claim to the invention of soul can be challenged by fans of Ray Charles and Sam Cooke, then his rights to the genres of rap, disco and funk are beyond question. He was to rhythm and dance music what Dylan was to lyrics: the unchallenged popular innovator.

“James presented obviously the best grooves,” rapper Chuck D of Public Enemy once told The Associated Press. “To this day, there has been no one near as funky. No one’s coming even close.”

His hit singles include such classics as “Out of Sight,” “(Get Up I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine,” “I Got You (I Feel Good)” and “Say It Out Loud - I’m Black and I’m Proud,” a landmark 1968 statement of racial pride.

“I clearly remember we were calling ourselves colored, and after the song, we were calling ourselves black,” Brown said in a 2003 Associated Press interview. “The song showed even people to that day that lyrics and music and a song can change society.”

He won a Grammy award for lifetime achievement in 1992, as well as Grammys in 1965 for “Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag” (best R&B recording) and for “Living In America” in 1987 (best R&B vocal performance, male.) He was one of the initial artists inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986, along with Presley, Chuck Berry and other founding fathers.

He triumphed despite an often unhappy personal life. Brown, who lived in Beech Island near the Georgia line, spent more than two years in a South Carolina prison for aggravated assault and failing to stop for a police officer. After his release on in 1991, Brown said he wanted to “try to straighten out” rock music.

From the 1950s, when Brown had his first R&B hit, “Please, Please, Please” in 1956, through the mid-1970s, Brown went on a frenzy of cross-country tours, concerts and new songs. He earned the nickname “The Hardest Working Man in Show Business.”

With his tight pants, shimmering feet, eye makeup and outrageous hair, Brown set the stage for younger stars such as Michael Jackson and Prince.

In 1986, he was inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. And rap stars of recent years overwhelmingly have borrowed his lyrics with a digital technique called sampling.

Brown’s work has been replayed by the Fat Boys, Ice-T, Public Enemy and a host of other rappers. “The music out there is only as good as my last record,” Brown joked in a 1989 interview with Rolling Stone magazine.

“Disco is James Brown, hip-hop is James Brown, rap is James Brown; you know what I’m saying? You hear all the rappers, 90 percent of their music is me,” he told the AP in 2003.

Born in poverty in Barnwell, S.C., in 1933, he was abandoned as a 4-year-old to the care of relatives and friends and grew up on the streets of Augusta, Ga., in an “ill-repute area,” as he once called it. There he learned to wheel and deal.

“I wanted to be somebody,” Brown said.

By the eighth grade in 1949, Brown had served 3 1/2 years in Alto Reform School near Toccoa, Ga., for breaking into cars.

While there, he met Bobby Byrd, whose family took Brown into their home. Byrd also took Brown into his group, the Gospel Starlighters. Soon they changed their name to the Famous Flames and their style to hard R&B.

In January 1956, King Records of Cincinnati signed the group, and four months later “Please, Please, Please” was in the R&B Top Ten.

While most of Brown’s life was glitz and glitter, he was plagued with charges of abusing drugs and alcohol and of hitting his third wife, Adrienne.

In September 1988, Brown, high on PCP and carrying a shotgun, entered an insurance seminar next to his Augusta office. Police said he asked seminar participants if they were using his private restroom.

Police chased Brown for a half-hour from Augusta into South Carolina and back to Georgia. The chase ended when police shot out the tires of his truck.

Brown received a six-year prison sentence. He spent 15 months in a South Carolina prison and 10 months in a work release program before being paroled in February 1991. In 2003, the South Carolina parole board granted him a pardon for his crimes in that state.

Soon after his release, Brown was on stage again with an audience that included millions of cable television viewers nationwide who watched the three-hour, pay-per-view concert at Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles.

Adrienne Brown died in 1996 in Los Angeles at age 47. She took PCP and several prescription drugs while she had a bad heart and was weak from cosmetic surgery two days earlier, the coroner said.

More recently, he married his fourth wife, Tomi Raye Hynie, one of his backup singers. The couple had a son, James Jr.

Two years later, Brown spent a week in a private Columbia hospital, recovering from what his agent said was dependency on painkillers. Brown’s attorney, Albert “Buddy” Dallas, said singer was exhausted from six years of road shows. Source

Damn, it’s a sad day for soul.
